xx-appearance
I bet to them your name is 'cheap'
If looks could kill, Alex would never be a murderer. His appearance is remarkably plain; he is not astonishingly beautiful nor ugly. He is of average height and weight--six feet, 154 pounds--and is built like a typical young man; not very athletic but not very fat either. His complexion is medium but he gets more tan in the summer for very obvious reasons.
Alex's blond hair has faint brown tones visible, primarily near his roots. It is a bit messy and his bangs shirt the tops of his eyebrows. However, he keeps his hair clean, although not necessarily neat. His eyes are chocolate brown, with darker tones on the edge of the iris. In terms of proportion, Alex has gotten off lucky, with the exception of having a slightly large nose.
Someone whose looks are rightfully described as "normal" would not be thought to have any distinguishing features. However, Alex's hands are slim; his fingers are thin. People who he meets by handshake often ask him if he is a pianist. (He tells them no, although he had a short stint on the viola during high school.) This is a useful physical characteristic for both his current occupation and his desired one, as both require precision and steady hands.
xx-personality
deep waters don't run still
why can you READ ME like no one else?
Despite being a flat-out introvert, Alex is both dependable and hardworking. These traits make him a good worker--every boss's dream--but a horrible acquaintance. In social situations, he is often hopelessly awkward. If one decides to be friends with Alex, then they should be prepared for embarrassment at parties and other gatherings. In small groups, he keeps his composure and is actually quite suave. His seriousness causes many to tell him to lighten up and smile for once, which he does not understand. Why smile if you have nothing to smile about? Determination is another defining characteristic of his; those who are as dedicated and headstrong as Alex are often depicted in popular media as good leaders or politicians.
As unwavering as he is, Alex cannot do himself--or anyone else, for that matter--much good due to the fact that he is not the one holding most of the strings in his life. He is in rather dire financial straits and is still paying off his horology training; a great deal of his income is spent on his cats (particularly George, who needs a special brand of cat food) and his monthly rent. The latter factor is not helped much by his landlord who seems to sadistically enjoy his tenants' misery. His job does not pay particularly well and he does not have a rich family member to bum money off of.

{familial history: Richard is of primarily Irish, British, and Czech descent. Melanie is half German (her father left Bavaria after World War II) and half self-proclaimed "mutt" (a mix of Spanish, Greek, Bulgarian, Norwegian, Polish, and Russian). Therefore, Alex is Irish, British, Czech, German, Spanish, Greek, Bulgarian, Norwegian, Polish, and Russian. When asked about his heritage, he typically replies "American of European descent" to keep things simple.}
Alex is a native inhabitant of Carlisle. He has lived there for the full duration of his life and knows everyone in town fairly well, as the residents of small towns do. His life is not marred by tragedies; his parents are married and living, as are his grandparents. There have been a few isolated incidents where he wanted to disappear or pack his bags and leave, but they had merely been bad days.
His fear and dislike of dogs is the result of an attack by one of Tobias's water spaniels. Alex was seven at the time, and he--against his grandfather's orders--went to go play with some young puppies. They were old enough for human contact, but not old enough to leave their mother. To make a long story short, the puppies' mother decided that her young were being threatened by this human boy and attacked Alex. He required seven stitches and still has a scar on his arm commemorating his foolishness. Although he is aware that the dog would not have attacked him if he had just left it alone, he is still less than fond of Canis lupis and cannot stand close contact with them.
Alex graduated high school as an average student--no honors but no failures. His best subjects were history, math, and German.* He completed a two-year horology program and took up a job as a watch repairman. Struggling with money is nothing new for him; his family was not exactly affluent and he lived a simple albeit fulfilling childhood. Now, he must put up with a landlord who embraces rachmanism and the mounting cost of keeping five cats.
*Only because he had help from his mother and grandfather, of course. He still remembers a bit of the language.

er liebt
Five cats; they have all been castrated and declawed. Click each cat's name for a picture of it.
Maria Theresa - Although she does not think extremely highly of herself, she thinks all of the other cats are complete losers and wants absolutely nothing to do with them. She is very stubborn and will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
Franklin Delano - He is, nicely put, a suck-up. Delano is always hanging around Alex and trying to get his ears scratched. When company comes, he is the first to greet them. He's far more social than a typical cat.
George - He is easily the quietest of the bunch and the most dignified. Like his owner, he prefers to keep to himself. Unlike his owner, he spends a lot of his spare time sleeping rather than doing something productive.
Mata Hari - Seemingly sweet, shy, and innocent with a hidden feisty side--what isn't to love about this young cat who was named after a World War I femme fatale? She will do anything for a bite of chicken salad.
Napoleon - The boss of the house. He is an egomaniac and is always grooming himself or kicking his roommates off of the windowsill. He's terrified of both ceiling fans and Alex's mom.

The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors defines horology as "the study of the art and science of measuring time."
